KCPA Statuses

Ordinary Member Status
  1. Counseling certificates, or an introduction letter from college if still a student,
  2. Transcripts,
  3. Personal therapy letter; minimum 10 sessions, not older than two years from a registered counselor,
  4. A copy of your national identity card, and
  5. Two coloured passport photographs.
  6. Submit a duly filled in official application form from KCPA and payments
Associate Counsellor Status
  • Minimum qualification is Diploma in Counselling Studies.
  • Fresh graduates (Diploma and above) qualify for this status, and no client work (log) is required.
  • This is the initial stage of professional qualification.
  • Practitioner remains in this status for at least Three years (3) before moving to the next
  • During the Three years (3) after the practitioner has been awarded the associate status, he/she should practice counselling, log in client hours and work under supervision.
  • Practitioner continues attending counselling trainings, workshops, seminars, conferences etc for professional development.
  • During this period, practitioner logs in Three Hundred (300) hours required to enable him /her move to the next level.
  • Practitioners finish Three (3) years as associates before graduating to the next level.
Accredited Counsellor Status

There are two routes to this status as explained hereafter:

Route A:

Finishes Three (3) years as an Associate Counsellor

Requirements:  Submit-

  • A copy of the associate status certificate
  • Client work log summary of Three Hundred (300) hours (accumulated during Associate Counsellor Status and duly signed by KCPA registered Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Personal therapy letter Ten (10) sessions from KCPA registered counsellor (Senior Counsellor Status and above).
  • Prove of professional development achieved e.g counselling trainings attended: workshops, seminars, conferences etc during Associate Counsellor Status period.
Accredited Counsellor Status

There are two routes to this status as explained hereafter:

Route B

For those not moving from Associate Counselor Level; the minimum qualification is BA in Counselling Studies.

Requirements:  Submit-

  • Certificate and transcript copies of counselling related studies and which should be at least Three (3) years since they were awarded.
  • Client work log summary for the Three year period in above of Three Hundred (300) hours duly signed by KCPA registered Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Personal therapy letter Fifteen (15) sessions from KCPA registered counsellor of (Senior Counsellor Status and above).
  • Prove of professional development achieved after professional qualification e.g. counselling trainings attended: workshops, seminars, conferences etc.
Senior Accredited Counsellor

Practitioner finishes Three (3) years as an accredited counsellor.

Requirements: Submit-

  • Copy certificate of accredited counsellor status.
  • Logged client work summary of Five Hundred (500) hours signed by KCPA registered Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Personal therapy letter of Ten (10) sessions from KCPA registered Counsellor Supervisor.
Associate Counsellor Supervisor

Route A: Those from the Senior Counsellor Status

Requirements: Submit-

  • Logged client work of Five Hundred (500) hours duly signed by either KCPA registered Counsellor Supervisor or KCPA Senior Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Certificate copy of Counsellor Supervision course.
  • Certificate copy of Senior Counsellor Status.
  • Personal therapy letter of Fifteen (15) sessions for those with counselling background and Twenty (20) sessions for BA holders without counselling background.
  • Supervision letter
Associate Counsellor Supervisor

Route B: For those not from Senior Counsellor Status; the minimum qualification is either Diploma or BA in Counselling.

Requirements: Submit-

  • Logged client work of Seven Hundred (700) hours which have not been presented in any other Level above, duly signed by either KCPA registered Counsellor Supervisor or Senior Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Certificate copy in Counsellor Supervision course.
  • Therapy session letter (10 sessions)
  • Supervision letter
Accredited Counsellor Supervisor

Minimum qualification is BA with a prerequisite Diploma in Counselling Studies or MA in Counselling Studies.

Requirements: Submit-

  • Logged client work of One Thousand (1000) hours duly signed by a KCPA registered Senior Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Certificate copy in Counsellor Supervision course.
  • Copy of Senior Counsellor Certificate course which was awarded in Level.
  • Two (2) referees of either KCPA registered Accredited Supervisor or Senior Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Evidence of writing and presenting papers in counselling conferences (at least two).
  • Personal therapy letter of Fifteen (15) sessions done by either KCPA registered Counsellor Supervisor or Senior Counsellor Supervisor.
  • Supervision letter
Senior Counsellor Supervisor

The applicant should have a PhD             in Counselling Studies or Psychology; OR MA in Counselling Psychology OR BA in Counselling Studies and Twenty (20) years since qualifying as a professional counsellor and Five Thousand (5000) hours of supervised practice.

Requirements: Submit-

  • Logged client work of One Thousand and Five Hundred (1500) hours which have not been submitted for any other Level above duly signed by a KCPA registered Senior Counsellor Supervisor (PhD and MA holders)
  • Prove he/she has authored at least one known counselling publication.
  • Prove he/she supervises MA or Doctorate counselling students in recognized universities.
  • Evidence of writing and presenting papers in counselling forums.
  • Video and audio tapes to back up professional engagements in the field.
  • Testimonials from at least two referees as documentary evidence.
  • Copies of academic and professional certificates.
  • Personal therapy letter of Twenty (20) sessions with a KCPA registered counsellor
